GFA acting against Unauthorised Betting

Last season brought continued issues for the Ghana Football Association, with numerous unauthorised betting operators accepting wagers for the GFAs significant competitions. This comes after new regulations were implemented last month by Kurt Okraku, the President of the GFA. This legislation required that sportsbooks maintain a betting license with this association. Refusal would prompt further actions to be implemented. Less than 31 days later, and an African operator accepted unauthorised wagers between December 27th to the 28th.

The Ghana Football Association released a public statement to all African operators. They expressed that all betting companies must terminate GFA and GFL services, that any accepted bets will result in substantial fines and potential criminal proceedings. It was noted in the statement that further notice wouldn’t be provided to these operators, that legal action would come unexpectedly. The GFA also clarified that they’d notified the Gaming Commission of Ghana, their national regulator. Going forward, this commission will assist in any criminal proceedings and shutdown sportsbook operating illegal wagers.

Kurt Okraku has stimulated the Ghana Football Association, reworking their internal structures and regulations for the benefit of the league’s longevity. The president implemented new requirements, which states that all players in the league cannot gamble in any capacity relating to sports. All of these alterations to the league come after multiple corruption scandals were found in the GFA. Their former president accepted numerous bribes while altering the rules to benefit a specific organisation. It resulted in Kwesi Nyantakyi being banned for life from the sport. To this day allegations regarding the previous illegal actions of the GFA are released, with the most recent revolving around their academies.
